What is a knock box?
A knock box is a container for collecting used coffee grounds or knocked-out coffee pucks. It is typically placed under the grinder or next to an espresso machine and serves to dispose of the used coffee grounds quickly and cleanly after pulling a shot of espresso. Unlike a conventional trash can, the knock box is specifically designed for the workflow at an espresso station and makes knocking out the portafilter easier.

How do you use a knock box?
Using a knock box is straightforward: After pulling an espresso shot, the portafilter is positioned over the drawer. By tapping it gently, the used coffee puck releases from the filter basket and falls into the collection area. Then, simply remove any remaining residue with a cleaning brush, and the portafilter is ready for the next shot. Once the knock box is full, it can be pulled out and emptied. Afterward, it is inserted back into place and is immediately ready for the next use.
