Various seals and labels can be found on coffee packaging. They represent different standards and requirements for cultivation, processing, and trade. Well-known certifications include the EU organic logo, Fairtrade, and the Rainforest Alliance.

The Fairtrade seal identifies products that are traded and produced according to the specifications of the Fairtrade system. Compliance with the respective standards is monitored within the framework of the certification system. Fairtrade-certified coffee is not automatically organic certified. A separate organic certification is required for that.

Organic espresso comes from production that complies with EU requirements for organic farming. These requirements relate to, among other things, production, processing, labeling, and inspection. For processed organic products, at least 95 percent of the agricultural ingredients must generally come from organic production for the EU organic logo to be used. Compliance with the requirements is verified by authorized inspection bodies or control authorities.

The Rainforest Alliance is a certification system with requirements for agricultural operations and supply chains. The standards include, among other things, requirements for agricultural practices, the management of natural resources, as well as social and economic aspects. Coffee with Rainforest Alliance certification meets the requirements applicable to the respective certification.

The various certifications follow different approaches and are therefore not directly equivalent to one another.

• Organic: The focus is on the requirements for organic farming as well as the requirements for the production, processing, and labeling of organic products.
• Fairtrade: The Fairtrade system includes, among other things, requirements for trade relations, producer organizations, and social, economic, and ecological criteria.
• Rainforest Alliance: The certification system includes, among other things, requirements for agricultural practices, the management of natural resources, and social aspects.

A coffee can carry more than one certification. For example, a Fairtrade-certified coffee is not automatically organic certified.
