What coffee certifications are there?

The food world is full of them: seals and certifications. You can often see a variety of seals on coffee packaging or in coffee shops. But which seals are official certifications, what benefits do they bring and which ones should you look out for when buying certified coffee beans? To give you transparency about all the important seals on espresso beans, we will show you which are the most important!

Buying Fairtrade Espresso: What you should pay attention to

The Fairtrade seal is a symbol of fair trade. This means paying fair prices; this is the minimum price that coffee producers or small farmers can receive for certain products. In order for espresso beans to receive this Fairtrade certification, certain social, ecological and economic criteria must be met. These include, for example, regulated working conditions, a ban on child labor or exploitation and the protection of natural resources. Only when all criteria and requirements along the entire value chain are met can a Fairtrade organization label the espresso with an official Fairtrade logo.

The aim of the Fairtrade Coffee Seal is to create a bridge between producers and consumers. To establish a long-term and fair trading relationship and at the same time to establish biologically sustainable coffee cultivation with a concomitant increase in quality. Fair payment of coffee producers for a better living and working situation in the growing areas.

What exactly are organic espressos?

Organic espresso is roasted espresso beans that are marked with an organic seal. The organic seal is a test and quality seal and identifies all organic espresso that comes from organic coffee cultivation and meets certain organic requirements and standards.

For example, an organic espresso may contain a maximum of 0.9% genetically modified material and at least 95% of the ingredients must be of natural origin or organic cultivation. The organic certification refers to the entire value chain and supply chain of the espresso. Controls are therefore carried out during production, processing, trade and storage. An organic espresso that meets all organic standards is marked with the official EU organic seal. This shows the shape of a leaf made of stars on a green background.

Espresso Rainforest Alliance certified - What advantages does the certification offer coffee farmers and cooperatives?

Espresso that is made from environmentally friendly ingredients and is grown in a socially responsible manner and comes from certified farms can be Rainforest Alliance certified. Rainforest Alliance coffees are only certified if all criteria and standards for official Rainforest Alliance certification are met. The guidelines are based on the criteria of environmental protection and social economics and responsibility.
